Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if the engine quits?
The trike is the best glider in the industry. You glide at half the speed of a parachute fall and you can glide down to the ground for a soft landing. Engine failure is not very common in ultralight trikes.
Why fly a trike?
The ultralight trike is one of the easiest ultralights to fly. You push the bar out to go up, pull in to go down, right to go left, and left to go right. The ultralight trike takes very little room to store. The wings pop off and go inside a carrying bag which is easy to transport. Your can fly ultralight trikes year around. They are not easily effected by wind. You can put a trike together by yourself in a short period of time.
What does it feel like to fly a trike?
It truly feels as if you are soaring like a bird through the air. The trike can fly very low and slow so that you can sight see or you can bring the power on and fly very fast. The ultralight trike is very versatile and it is not a limited ultralight.
What is the ceiling height?
FFA does not want you to exceed 17,900 feet. We never fly over 13,000 feet.
Can I train myself?
No. You do need proper instructions. You learn safety aspects of flight. Our trike training includes up to 10 hours of in the air training, additional hours of ground school, weather forecasting, communication techniques, emergency landing, and some airport traffic patterns. Our training program follows the USUA pilot flight training programs.
Do i need a license?
No, you don't need a license, but you do need the proper training to fly an ultralight trike.
How fast can a trike travel?
There are several wings you can put on that will effect the speed of flight. Trikes can fly as fast as 100 mph and as low as 28 mph. This all depends on the type of wing and the type of trike you have.
What winds can a trike fly safely in?
This is up to the pilot's skills and what they can personaly fly safely in. Ultralight trikes handle wind and turbulence very well.
Do i need my own plane to take lessons?
No, we supply ultralight aircrafts for training and we also rent them out for solo training.
How long can the ultralight trike fly on one tank of gas?
The duration of one tank of gas depends on your wing type and trike engine. Trikes usually fly 150 miles on a 5 gallon tank of gas and up to 300 miles on the 13 gallon tank. Trikes are a very efficient machine.
What is the maximum weight a trike can carry?
Most trikes wings are rated at load carrying capactiry of 990 lbs.
How much room does it take for landing and take off?
It takes approximately 190 ft for take off for two people, and 220 ft. to get back on the ground.
Are ballistic or emergency parachutes used on trikes?
Emergency parachutes are entirely up to each pilot. The safety record on ultralight trikes are outstanding. An emergency parachute is just an insurance policy that the pilot could have if he/she desires. BRS emergency parachutes are also being installed in Cessna aircraft in the general aviation field.
Are trikes used for search and rescue operations?
Yes, they are. They are probably the best search and rescue ultralight vehicles becuase they are capable of flying in higher winds, and you can land almost anywhere like dirt roads or open fields. You could find a lost squirrel with a trike. No other ultralights have the wing clearance of a trike.
Can you fly at night?
No, it is unsafe for you to fly an ultralight trike at night, and it is against the 103 ruling.
Is there a medical certificate required?
No, there is not any medical certificates required to fly a trike.
Can i fly over national parks?
You are required to maintain an altitude atleast 2000 ft. over national parks.
What kind of maintenance does a trike require?
There is not much maintenance required for ultralight trikes. At most, you will have to change the spark plugs and the gear oil.
Most important, are they safe?
"An aircrafts safety depends primarily on that of its pilot." We are not interested in putting our lives in danger, and consequently, not yours either. Although, you will be trained to correct sketchy situations. We believe prevention and judgment are the ultimate concept.
